What Will I Learn

This course offers experience with the collection of body fluids, laboratory procedures, and skills that are necessary to enter the health care force as a phlebotomist. This course prepares the student to take the national certification exam (CPT).

Who Should Attend?

Starting August of 2024 students will be accepted into this course by an application process.   

Application deadline:  July 31, 2024 by 5:00 P.M. (MT)  

 In order to apply for the phlebotomy program, the following items need to be on file in the Health Workforce Industry Manager's office by the deadline date.

Submit application items to: College of Southern Idaho, Workforce Department, ATTN: Rene Rambur P. O. Box 1238, Twin Falls, Idaho 83303-1238 OR take directly to the CSI Workforce Office, located in the ATIC Building.

  2. Statement of Interest
  3. A Current CNA certification or EMT certification is required.

In addition to the items above students must have two letters of recommendation submitted by the reference directly to: 

College of Southern Idaho, Workforce Department, ATTN: Rene Rambur P. O. Box 1238, Twin Falls, Idaho 83303-1238.

Students are selected on a point system. In the event that there are more applicants than seats available, the applicants having the highest points will be admitted.

Notice:

After being admitted to the program, students need to provide the following:

  1. Proof of immunizations
  2. Flu shot
  3. Background check
  4. Drug screen
  5. Medical Insurance
  6. Current physical, 
  7. BLS certification 

Students must provide proof of the above items before they are able to participate in clinicals.  Failure to comply could prohibit students from completing the course.

What Will I Learn?

  • Use verbal and written communication.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of age-related communication and care.
  • Demonstrate accepted professional, interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate employability skills.
  • Discuss phlebotomy in relation to the health care setting.
  • Identify the anatomic structure and function of body systems in relation to services performed by phlebotomists.
  • Recognize/identify supplies, equipment, and interfering chemical substances.
  • Demonstrate the skills and knowledge necessary to perform phlebotomy.
  • Practice accepted procedures of transporting, accessioning, and processing specimens.
  • Practice quality assurance and safety.
  • Practice infection control following standard precautions.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of communicable diseases, including AIDS.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of legal issues and patient rights.

Grading Practices

  1. The final grade is based on pass or fail.
  2. Completion of 100 successful draws, 80 hours of classroom content delivery and 80 hours of precepting by the end of the class semester at the location to which one is assigned by the instructor.*
  3. Once the program is completed, the student will receive a certification of completion.

Walk Away With:

Students who complete this program will receive a certificate of completion from the College of Southern Idaho and are eligible to sit for the Phlebotomy Technician Certification Exam (CPT).
