CourseGraphic If you’ve ever wanted to paint horses, big skies, mountains, sagebrush, or just the feeling of the West itself, this class is the perfect place to begin. In this gentle, beginner-friendly watercolor course, you’ll learn how to paint beautiful, recognizable subjects without needing to draw perfectly or have any previous art experience. We’ll start with simple shapes and color washes, then create small Western-themed paintings such as sunsets, wildflowers, silhouettes of horses or riders, and wide-open landscapes. You’ll learn how to let watercolor flow, how to mix natural color palettes inspired by the land, and how to use layers to create depth and atmosphere. The focus is on joy over perfection — making art that feels like the West feels: free, spacious, alive.
You will learn:
- Basic watercolor techniques (wet-into-wet, layering, soft edges)
- How to choose and mix colors inspired by Western skies and prairie light
- Simple ways to suggest barns, fences, trees, and foothills
- How to build a painting step by step, even if you “can’t draw”
- Confidence, playfulness, and your own creative voice
By the end of the course, you’ll have finished several small Western-inspired paintings and a growing sense of comfort with watercolor as your medium. No experience needed. All levels welcome.
