Beginning Wet Felting Purse
Course number :
CWET CFET C001
ID :
4578
« back to classes page
Beginning wet felting is an ancient technique dating back to 6500-3000 BCE In Turkey.
Wet felting is a technique where wool fibers are combined with water, soap, and agitation to create a solid, durable fabric. The process involves laying out the wool in layers, then adding soapy water to soften the fibers and make them more flexible. Once wet, the wool is repeatedly rubbed, rolled, and pressed to encourage the fibers to interlock and bond together. The felting process continues until the desired thickness and texture are achieved. We will be using dyed merino wool, with sari silk to embellish it. Then combing cordage &/or yarns to create the strap, which will be hand sewn on. Buttons or snaps will be provided for closure selection. You will be making a purse like the picture.
Note: This class
Will
require standing for a long period of time and using hands to do the agitation on the wool. Students should wear rubber soled, comfortable shoes. Please bring three old bath towels to get wet. A vinyl apron would be handy and bring a tub or 5-gallon bucket to carry home your wet towels.. (Thrift stores are wonderful if you need to buy a towel!)
